Knowledge Day in Minsk Gymnasium #42On September, 1, the Knowledge Day, we conducted an open lesson on refugee issues for pupils of 6 and 8 forms in Gymnasium #42 by Nobel Prize Winner Z. Alferov. Increasing the cultural awareness of refugee problems and the work of United Nations in this sphere were stated as main goals of the lesson. In general, the lesson was aimed at raising the acknowledgement on the problems which representatives of other nationalities face coming to Belarus. Prevention of latent discrimination is also amidst the core ideas of the lesson.

Darya Bohdan, INA “Evolutio” Organization and Methodological Support Assistant, delivered the speech within the framework of the open lesson and in an accessible and interactive form familiarized pupils with such terms as “refugee”, “internally displaced person”, “asylum seeker”, “migrant”. 1st place winner-video of the Contest of Art Works/Video Clips "Refugees: New Challenges and Responses", conducted jointly by UNHCR in Belarus and the INA "Evolutio" in April-June 2016, showed children how to build tolerant society and was welcomed by them. Special attention was given to means of peacekeeping as a preventive measure in refugee problem. Routes which use refugees to come to Europe were shown to children. Pupils were given information about the work of the United Nations and its agencies’ activity in the world and in Belarus.

Schoolchildren liked the lesson. They were vividly answering to the questions, discussing the problems and asking their questions of concern. Schoolchildren were given commemorative prizes. We wish you a successful academic year!
