On October 27, 2016 the Section «Migration, Refugees and Tolerance Issues in Contemporary World» was held in the framework of the XV International Scientific Conference «Belarus in Contemporary World». The event was conducted jointly by the UNHCR Office in the Republic of Belarus, the Faculty of International Relations of BSU and the International Non-governmental Association for Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes «Evolutio».
Victor Shadurski, Dean of the Faculty of International Raltions, opened the section. Aliaksandr Velikarodnau, Programme Assistant of the UNHCR Representation in Belarus, thanked colleagues for the interest to the section and expressed his hope that the problem of forced migrants will be solved. He delivered a speech on the topic “UNHCR’s Activities in the world and in the Republic of Belarus” in which current tendencies of agency’s work were pointed out.
Reports on refugee issues, various kinds of migration in the world and in the Republic of Belarus, tolerance covering the problems from all sides: legal, economic, political, sociological were presented. The number of refugees and asylum seekers in Belarus, age and gender structure, nationality profile of these persons; the number of Belarusians going abroad for work and education in comparison with persons coming to Belarus for the same purposes; migration flows in Brexit context; tolerance issues and attitude towards refugees and their economic involvement in the receiving society became the major topics for discussions.
Andrey Selivanov, Executive Director of INA “Evolutio”, summing up the work of the section noticed its importance as a platform for discussion of migration problems both on scientific and practice-oriented levels.
