Participants of the eventA practical seminar "Relevant Aspects of Policultural Education among Students of Vocational Training. Formation of Tolerant Behavior Towards Refugees" took place on May, 30 on the basis of Grodno State College of Techniques, Technologies and Design. The event was organized jointly by UNHCR Belarus, INA "Evolutio" and the Republican Institute of Vocaitional Training (RIVT) for professionals of Grodno and Grodno oblast.

The arrangement became the fifth in a row of events aimed at formation of tolerant behaviour towards refugees among specialists of vocational education. It is worth noting that every similar at first glance seminar in different sites is stunned by its unique atmosphere and peculiarity. So, in the city of Grodno, guests with a memorable concert were welcomed by foreign students from various countries of the world. They performed both their national and Belarusian songs, demonstrated oratory and dance skills.

In the opening statements organizers and guests of the event noted the importance of holding such seminars, as well as the importance of choosing the venue for the event: Grodno State College of Techniques, Technologies and Design became the first in the Republic of Belarus to accept foreign students, and therefore the aspect of multicultural education is integral to the educational process. 

At the beginning of the event participants had a chance to see the documentary film "Refugees in the XXI century" made by INA "Evolutio" in 2016. Emotional component of the film left no one indifferent to the problem.

Foreign studentsDuring the theoretical part of the seminar Yuliya Miashkova, UNHCR Programme Assistant, gave a presentation, where she told about UNHCR mandate in the world and Belarus in particular. She also familiarized everyone with the situation with refugees in Belarus, gave statistics.

Yuliya Anishchyk, legal adviser of the Refugee Counseling Service in Grodno, gave her presentation on the legal nuances of terminology in the area of asylum, the national asylum system and the legislation of the Republic of Belarus on refugees, provided statistics on refugees in Grodno and Grodno region. She demonstrated the refugee status certificate to the guests and gave successful examples of integration and employment of forced migrants from Ukraine to Grodno.

Valentina Gorbatsiuk, Head of the Department of Methodological Accompaniment of Social and Pedagogical Activity of RIVT, and Liubou Kravets, PI Assistant of the INA "Evolutio", delivered the information on methodoligal recommendations regarding the policultural lesson conduction. They covered the concepts of "tolerance", "multicultural education", and also discussed with the event participants the issue of Belarusian society tolerance as a whole and individual. The guests of the seminar were actively involved in the discussion, asked the questions of interest.

SpeakersIt should be noted that the participants of the event, psychologists and teachers of the vocational education system, among the handouts received CDs with methodological recommendations for conducting an educational hour to form a tolerant attitude towards refugees. Participants thanked the organizers for the extensive and extremely necessary package of handouts.

Apart from receiving information on terminological and methodological aspects in the area of refugees and policultural education, within the practical part of the seminar participants got opportunity to develop a plan-scenario of the educational hour on formation of tolerant attitude towards refugees. It is planned that elaborated materials will be useful in the specialists' practical activity.

Following the results of the event, all participants received certificates confirming their participation in the event.

Wonderful atmosphere of the Lyceum contributed to active and creative participation of the vocational training specialists while preparing scenarios of the educational hour on tolerance formation.
