Round table on the issues of refugees, migration and toleranceOn October 25, 2017 the Section «Migration, Refugees and Tolerance Issues in Contemporary World» was held in the framework of the XVI International Scientific Conference «Belarus in Contemporary World». The event was conducted jointly by the Faculty of International Relations of BSU and the International Non-governmental Association for Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes «Evolutio» with the support of the UNHCR Office in the Republic of Belarus.

The work of the Section was opened by Dean of the Faculty of International Relations V. Shadurski. Then the Legal Advisor of the UNHCR Office in the Republic of Belarus Timofey Solodkov noted the importance and relevance of scientific research on refugee and migration issues.

Reports within the Section covered the following issues: refugees in the world and in the Republic of Belarus, migrants in the Russian Federation, migration changes in the European Union, problems of labor migration from Belarus to Russia, issues of educational migration, multicultural education of youth, etc. In particular, reports were delivered on labor migration in the conditions of formation of the common labor market of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, migration control problems in the European Union, issues of modifying the European asylum granting system (draft regulation Dublin IV). Also, participants of the Section got acquainted with methodological approaches to the statistical accounting of international migration in the field of education. The representative of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus told about changes in the legislation of the Republic of Belarus in the field of forced migration. At the end of the Section representative of the Republican Institute of Vocational Training spoke with theses on the topic of multicultural education of students. In her speech, she raised issues of tolerance in Belarus. Participants of the Section were given the opportunity to talk about the issue of tolerance education in schools with students present at the event. The students of the Faculty of International Relations of the Belarusian State University told about their school experience of participating in the lessons of multicultural education. During the conversation with the students, the Section participants learned that work is being done to form tolerant attitudes in schools, but often it happens in the form of class hours or in the format of information weeks.

Andrey Selivanov, Executive Director of the INA “Evolutio”, summarizing the Section, noted its importance as a platform for discussing migration problems both at the scientific level and with the availability of a practical component.
