Meeting at the Institute of Journalism of BSUOn December 1, 2017 UNHCR Office in the Republic of Belarus and the INA “Evolutio” organized a meeting with students of the Faculty for Advanced Training and Retraining of the Institute of Journalism on the coverage of refugees and migration problems in mass media.

Director of the Institute of Journalism of Belarusian State University Sergey Dubovik delivered an introductory speech. He greeted all the participants, outlined the problems and relevance of the topic under consideration and opened the event. Marina Melnik, Programme Assistant of the UNHCR Representation in the Republic of Belarus, in her speech told about the organization’s activities in the Republic of Belarus, described problems journalists face while writing news on refugees. Participants of the event were particularly interested in the issue related to the period for considering applications for granting refugee status. In accordance with the Belarusian legislation the period for considering the application should not exceed six months, but the Government of the Republic of Belarus in 2014 introduced a preferential registration system for Ukrainians who arrived from Donetsk or Lugansk regions. They are exempt from payment of the state duty, and the period for considering the application for granting refugee status is reduced to 3 months.

The meeting was held in the form of a conversation-presentation. The participants were able to get acquainted with the current information on the correct coverage of this issue, as well as to ask questions on the refugee problem in Belarus and in the world. Representatives of the UN Refugee Agency clearly described and visualized this problem to the media representatives. Within the framework of the meeting, the documentary “Refugees of the XXI century” prepared by the Belarusian company “Vladimir Bokun's Workshop” was screened.
