Contest winnersResults of the contest on the best coverage in mass media of the topic "Refugees and Stateless Persons in the Republic of Belarus", which was held in May – November 2018 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Non-governmental Association for Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes “Evolutio”, were summed up. 

32 materials from 12 representatives of the Belarusian mass media submitted their works for jury's consideration. 

So the winners are:

— in the nomination «Best newspaper/journal publication or Internet-publication in (series of publications)»:

Natalia Hamutovskaya for series of materials in the Internet-Journal “Names”;

— in the nomination «Best TV/Radio broadcast (series of broadcasts)»:

Maxim Vecherkov for series of videos on the ONT TV Channel on refugee issues;
Aliaksandr Haveika for the program “Main Topic” on the TV Channel “Belarus-4. Gomel”.

For active participation in the Contest encouraging awards and memorable diplomas are awarded to:

  • Nina Mihnova and Marsim Ostouhov for the program  «In search of Hope» on «RadioMogilev» radio;
  • Natalia Sakhno for series of materials in the “Teacher’s newspaper” newspaper;
  • Marina Zhdanova and Oksana Mytko for series of materials on the Internet-Agency “Minsk-news”.

    . The first question was asked by the correspondent of the TV channel “Belarus-4. Gomel » Aliaksandr Haveika. He thanked Jean-Yves Bouchardy and the whole team for their assistance in covering the problem of refugees in the Belarusian media, and asked what has changed recently in the situation of refugees in Gomel and the Gomel region and whether the level of tolerance among the local residents for these categories of people has increased. The representative of the UNHCR Jean-Yves Bouchardy noted that in recent years Belarus has made great progress in solving the problem of refugees and stateless persons, which can certainly be said about the Gomel region in particular. The journalist of the Minsk-News information agency Oksana Mytko was interested in the number of refugees, persons with additional protection and statelessness living in Minsk and the Minsk region. Natalya Sokolovskaya, Deputy Head of the Department for Refugees and Asylum of the Department of Citizenship and Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, provided the information according to official statistics available on the official website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Belarus. Candidate of legal sciences, associate professor of the University of Civil Protection of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus Elena Pasovets, who acted as supervisor of one of the winners of the contest of scholarships for students, candidates for a master's degree, postgraduate students, took the opportunity to ask her question.

The awarding ceremony took place on December, 27 at the Faculty of International Relations of the Belarusian State University. The event was attended by the officers of the UNHCR Office in Belarus who together with the INA “Evolutio” presented diplomas and cash rewards to the winners.
